Good Enough is Better for Improvement than Perfection

I have spent a lot of time working on and trying to perfect this website that you most likely are reading this article from.

I have redone it countless times, always thinking “this is not as good as I want it to be”, before scrapping the project and starting over. But most of the times, it was actually good enough for what I needed.

This problem that I was facing, was the problem of being a perfectionist. I really wanted to make something perfect, and because of that I was in perfection paralysis. But making something perfect is not necessary all of the time.

Perfecting a specific thing is a very wonderful pursuit. You spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve the specific thing, and then you spent even more time trying to implement it. The point is that however wonderful perfecting is, it is also a very time consuming action, and it should therefore be reserved for things that are important to you and others. You should probably not start out perfecting a thing. Try making something that is good enough, and see how it does. Good enough is perfect for testing out ideas.

Because while you are trying to perfect every little bit about your specific idea, it is inaccessible. It is not out there. Noone can see it, noone can benefit from it, and you cannot learn from it. And the last part is very important. Because learning from mistakes is one of the best ways to learn. It is a much faster way of learning than most other methods.

So now I have made this website, that I deem good enough for its purpose. It is most definitely not perfect. And that is okay, because I will be improving it while writing and creating content, so that others can learn from my experiences and I can learn from my mistakes.
